Every year on July 18, Nelson Mandela International Day is celebrated world-wide. Mandela Day is an opportunity for everyone to take action and inspire change. 

This day serves as a call to action for individuals, communities, and organisations to reflect on Mandela's values and ideas, as well as to make a good effect in their own communities. 

ORIGIN

November 2009 - The United Nations General Assembly proclaims July 18 as "Nelson Mandela International Day" in honour of the former South African President's contributions to the culture of peace and freedom. Resolution A/RES/64/13 recognises Mandela's values and commitment to serving humanity in the areas of conflict resolution, race relations, human rights promotion and protection, reconciliation, gender equality and the rights of children and other vulnerable groups, poverty alleviation, and social justice promotion.

The resolution recognises his contribution to the global struggle for democracy and the development of a culture of peace.

WHY NELSON MADELA INTERNATIONAL DAY IS IMPORTANT?

He led the path for all of humanity

Revolutionary. Philanthropist. President. Mandela led a breathtaking life, displaying incredible courage in the face of adversity. He was imprisoned for 27 years. He climbed to become South Africa's first black head of state, ultimately bringing apartheid to an end. He was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize. This occasion is a moment to reflect on everything that one man may achieve.

The Nelson Mandela Foundation, which was founded in 1999, focused on rural development and school construction while also initiating a long-term and persistent campaign on the HIV/AIDS pandemic.

He never ceased fighting

South Africa is impoverished, which leads to starvation, low education, and unemployment. On Nelson Mandela International Day, numerous campaigners cast a light on the concerns of the struggling country, seeking to give a brighter future.
