November 2009 - The United Nations General Assembly proclaims July 18 as "Nelson Mandela International Day" in honour of the former South African President's contributions to the culture of peace and freedom. Resolution A/RES/64/13 recognises Mandela's values and commitment to serving humanity in the areas of conflict resolution, race relations, human rights promotion and protection, reconciliation, gender equality and the rights of children and other vulnerable groups, poverty alleviation, and social justice promotion.
The resolution recognises his contribution to the global struggle for democracy and the development of a culture of peace.
