It was 14 years ago on June 12, when a young Virat Kohli stepped on to the field at the Harare Sports Club against Zimbabwe to make his T20I debut for India. Fast-forward to the same date in the year 2024 as India gears up to face the USA in the T20 World Cup 2024, Kohli is the second highest run-getter in the format with a total of 4042 runs at an average of 50.52. However, there has been a bit of a worry for the Indian fans about the star batter.

Kohli has registered scores of 1 and 4 against Ireland and Pakistan in the 2 matches so far. While the star batter has been ultra aggressive with his approach, it seems like the lack of runs has been a concern for the team. Or is it?

Over the years, one thing Kohli has shown is the ability to silence the doubters. We saw it in the IPL, when he shut down the critics of his strike-rate as he, at times, single-handedly guided RCB to wins and got them into the playoffs and also won the Orange Cap with 741 runs to his name.

Speaking to Star Sports, Wasim Jaffer brushed aside the concerns about Kohli's form. The former cricketer said that the star batter will stand up once the tournament heats up. Jaffer said it will be a big day for Kohli as it is his debut anniversary.

"Oh definitely, It's very unlikely for Virat Kohli to have got out couple of times cheaply. Obviously, the wickets do play a part. It has not been the ideal conditions for batting. We haven't seen big scores in New York. He will find his feet in this tournament for sure. As soon as the tournament heats up, you will see Virat Kohli stand up in those moments. Big day, the great guy made his T20I debut. He has been phenomenal. And we want him to get those big runs. Like I said, we get into Super 8s, we need this guy to stand up," said Jaffer.

Brad Hogg, who was also part of the discussion, echoed the comments from Jaffer and said he wouldn't be too concerned about Kohli's lacklustre start. Hogg said that Kohli's late arrival in USA meant he is yet to get used to the conditions.

Hogg was also of the opinion that Wednesday could finally be the day when Kohli hits form.

"Well, hopefully, tonight is the night. But I wouldn't be too worried about it. I think you have to wait till the Super 8s. That's when he really stands up. The other thing is that he had a bit of a break, just after the IPL. He arrived late, so he hasn't gotten adjusted to the conditions as quickly as the others. I wouldn't be worried if I am the Indian fans. I think he has been supported by a good strong batting lineup, especially with Pant coming in at No.3," said Hogg.

As Kohli steps onto the field in New York all eyes will once again be on him. The star batter will be expected to deliver a special knock and guide India safely into the Super 8s in their final match at the Nassau County stadium.
