India’s Rohan Bopanna made progress in both men’s and mixed doubles event of the US Open on Saturday, August 31. The 44-year-old competing alongside Indonesia’s Aldila Sutjiadi beat Demi Schuurs and Tim P¼tz in a tight first round match by 7-6 (7), 7-6 (5).
Both pairs put on an excellent exhibition of tennis fighting tooth and nail for the victory forcing both games into a tie-breaker. However, it was Bopanna and Sutjiadi who prevailed over the German-Dutch duo to progress to the pre-quarters where they will face the pair of John Peers and Kateřina Siniaková.
Bopanna also had a field day even in the men’s doubles event as he, along with Matthew Ebden, edged past the pair of Roberto Carballés Baena and Federico Coria comfortably in the second-round match. The second-seeded duo beat the Spanish-Argentinean duo by 6-2, 6-4 to seal their spot in the pre-quarters. They will be up against the Argentinean pair of Maximo Gonzalez and Andrés Molteni in the next game.
Meanwhile, another Indian, Yuki Bhambri, also progressed ahead at Flushing Meadows with a second round victory along with Albano Olivetti. The duo beat Austin Krajicek and Jean-Julien Rojer by 4-6, 6-3, 7-5 to progress to the third round.
However, N. Sriram Balaji failed to move ahead in the competition losing in the second round along with his Argentine partner Guido Andreozzi. The duo lost to Michael Venus and Neal Skupski in straight sets by 6(4)-7, 4-6 to bring their journey to an end. Earlier, Balaji and Andreozzi had started their journey by beating the Kiwi-Mexican pair of Marcus Daniell and Miguel Angel Reyes-Varela in the first round.
