Boxing legend Mary Kom has stepped down as India's chef-de-mission for the upcoming Olympics 2024 in Paris, citing personal reasons, according to a report from PTI. According to the news agency, Kom said that she was feeling embarrassed to step down from the role but was left with no other choice.
Kom was appointed as the chef-de-mission in March of this year by the Indian Olympic Association (IOA) feeling that she was a natural choice to guide and mentor the athletes at the event in Paris. She was set to have luger Shiva Keshavan working as her deputy.
"Mary Kom's unparalleled dedication to sports and inspiring journey makes her a natural choice to guide and mentor our athletes at the Olympics," IOA said.
