Congress MP Shashi Tharoor has once again come out in support of Sanju Samson ahead of the T20 World Cup 2024. Tharoor has argued that there isn't enough buzz about the RR captain, who has been in scintillating form in the Indian Premier League's 2024 season. Tharoor has slammed the Indian selection committee for repeatedly ignoring Samson for ICC tournaments and has said that justice needs to be given to the wicketkeeper batter.
This is not the first time that Tharoor has come out in support of the talented player. Back in 2023, Tharoor had demanded an explanation from the selectors who did not give Samson a long rope ahead of the 50-over World Cup. On Wednesday, 24 April, Tharoor reacted to Harbhajan Singh's tweet where the former India cricketer had backed Samson for a spot in the T20 World Cup 2024.
"Delighted to agree with my fellow MP Harbhajan Singh on both Yashasvi Jaiswal and Sanju Samson! Have been arguing for years that Sanju has not had the selectoral breaks he deserved. Now he is the leading Keeper-batsman in the IPL but is still not discussed when the team is debated. Justice for Sanju!" Tharoor tweeted on April 24 morning.
Harbhajan had earlier tweeted after the RR vs MI game that Samson should be the first-choice keeper for the Indian team as they travel to the US and West Indies to play the world tournament. Samson currently is the fifth highest scorer in the tournament with 314 runs from 8 matches.
Samson's repeated absence from world tournaments has angered a section of the fans in Indian cricket. Samson has cult status in Indian cricket and gets loud cheers from the crowd whenever he plays outside of India.
Earlier, former Australia cricketer Aaron Finch had praised Sanju Samson for his batting and leadership in the Indian Premier League 2024. Speaking on Star Sports, Finch said that not only has Samson played the situation while batting in all the games, but has led Rajasthan exceptionally well in the tournament.
"He's been playing really mature innings and that's what is required for the team. I think in times of T20 cricket, the ego of the batsman can get in the way of what the team needs sometimes but he's been playing each and every situation exactly how it's needed to be done," Aaron Finch said on Monday on Star Sports.
"I think he's leading the side unbelievably well, you can see how calm the Rajasthan Royals are when they're under pressure. And I think that the only game they lost was when they had that meltdown against GT right at the back end of the game, so they've been so clinical right throughout this IPL and a lot of credit has to go to Sanju for that," Aaron Finch concluded.
