Artificial intelligence is one of the biggest tools that have reconstructed the technological and industrial landscape, enabling engineers to choose the right path for development. The biggest question arises about how to adapt to the new change and work with it. Last week, a webinar was conducted for various industry leaders where they shared their thoughts about the need for critical engineers to work with AI for development.

Dun and Bradstreet often argued over the capabilities of AI models, generating various opportunities and challenges for engineers. He further said that there is a need for subject matter and expertise to overcome challenges served by AI. He advised a multi-faceted skill development approach that involves online resources, formal education, and mentorship with hands-on experience. Masa Karahashi (Senior Vice President of Engineering, Avalara) suggested the need for practical engagement with AI tools, which could be beneficial. Use some basic AI tools for a start.

The hands-on work experience will help engineers have a clear understanding of the limitations and capabilities of artificial intelligence. However, both engineers have stressed the fact that critical thinking has the ability to evaluate AI outputs and is perhaps being recognized as one of the crucial skills for engineers.

It is crucial to recognize the importance of critical thinking as a key for engineers to work with artificial intelligence. There are some instances where AI-generated information could be false or misleading, as it does not have the ability to store information; it works on a set of commands, not on its own. The spread of false information through AI has developed the concept of ethical considerations for AI.
