Indian Space Research Organisation (Isro) Chairman S. Somanath expressed his admiration for SpaceX founder Elon Musk, hailing him as an inspiration for the space industry.
Somanath, in a podcast with Ranveer Allahbadia, highlighted Musk's multifaceted approach to space technology and his ability to navigate both technical and political challenges.
"Young people at Isro frequently quote Musk," Somanath noted. "His work in rocket science, technology, and satellite constellations is truly remarkable. He's not just advancing technology but also mastering the politics of applying it."
The Isro chief praised Musk's vision for reusable launch vehicles and his success in bringing NASA-developed engine technology into the private sector. Somanath suggested that Musk's political acumen likely played a role in this achievement.
Somanath also commended Musk's Starlink project, which has launched thousands of satellites for global communication. "He approached the concept and elevated it to national importance. This can only be done by someone who understands the system comprehensively," he said.
The Isro chairman emphasised Musk's unique ability to work effectively with engineers, technologists, and politicians, driven by an insatiable curiosity.
Expressing a desire to engage with Musk, Somanath said he would love to discuss future visions, including reusable rockets, Mars missions, and creating habitats beyond Earth.
He also mentioned his interest in exploring Musk's thoughts on achieving the high speeds necessary to reach exosolar planets, those belonging to another star outside the Solar Systen, highlighting it as one of the major challenges in space exploration.
