The Uttarakhand Uniform Civil Code became a law after President Droupadi Murmu gave her approval to the bill that was passed in the state Assembly last month. The legislation presents a common law for marriage, divorce, inheritance of property in Uttarakhand.
With the President's assent, Uttarakhand became the first state since independence to have a uniform civil code.
The legislation mandates registration of live-in relationships for residents living inside or outside the state. Children born of live-in relationships will be considered legitimate. Moreover, women deserted by their live-in partners will be entitled to maintenance.
The law also bans polygamy and 'halala' practised among a section of Muslims. The law, however, will not apply to the tribals for the conservation of their traditions, practices and rituals.
