Marumalarchi Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (MDMK) MP A Ganeshamoorthy, who attempted suicide a few days ago when he consumed pesticide, died of cardiac arrest early on Thursday.
The 76-year-old leader died while undergoing treatment at a private hospital in Coimbatore around 5 am.
Ganeshamoorthy, who was elected on a DMK ticket in the 2019 Lok Sabha polls from Erode, developed uneasiness and vomited on March 24. He was subsequently admitted to a private hospital in Erode by his family members.
After check-ups, he was admitted to the ICU and put on the ventilator, police were quoted by news agency PTI as saying.
The lawmaker told his family members that he had consumed pesticide. Ganeshamoorthy was later shifted to a private hospital in Coimbatore with two doctors and his family members accompanying him in an ambulance.
Hospital authorities handed the body to the police, who took it to the Institute of Road Transport (IRT) Medical College Hospital for autopsy. After post-mortem, the body will be taken to Kumaravalasu village, 15 km from Erode, where it will be buried, MDMK sources said, PTI reported.
Ganeshamoorthy had previously won the Lok Sabha polls from Palani in 1998 and Erode in 2009. He is survived by a son and a daughter.
