Dr Sandip Ghosh, the former principal of Kolkata's RG Kar Medical College and Hospital, has been accused of brutally assaulting his wife just 14 days after she gave birth via Caesarean section. Neighbours at his former residence in Barasat, recounted the disturbing incident, which allegedly occurred nearly 12 years ago.
Sandip Ghosh is facing heat after a trainee doctor was raped and murdered at RG Kar hospital. Soon after the incident, Sandip Ghosh resigned as principal, but was soon granted the top post at a different hospital. The move raised eyebrows, with questions being raised over the haste in his reappointment. Ghosh is also being probed for his alleged involvement in financial irregularities in the state-run health facility.
Locals said that Dr Ghosh, who had lived in the area for about two years, was known for his unruly behaviour. According to Ashish Banerjee, a resident who lived next door to Ghosh’s former home, the situation escalated into a violent confrontation that left Ghosh's wife severely injured.
“There was a war of words between me and Ghosh once. His behaviour was always bad. I later found out he was a doctor. During his time here, there was an incident where he beat his wife so badly that her Caesarean stitches tore, and she was bleeding. Initially, locals didn't interfere because it was seen as a family matter, but when it became too severe, everyone came out and protested. This happened 14 days after her childbirth,” Banerjee told India Today TV.
Another neighbour, who lived behind Ghosh's former residence, shared a similar account, stating that she and her son had also witnessed the alleged incident.
“Ghosh stayed here for a very short time and then sold his house. It was in this house that he beat his wife. The entire area gathered outside when it happened. I don't exactly remember if it was during her pregnancy or just after childbirth, but it was a shocking incident. He never mixed with anyone,” the neighbour recalled.
The house in question has since changed ownership twice. However, the neighbours’ memories of the horrifying event remain vivid.
Dr Sandip Ghosh, who is facing scrutiny from the CBI and Kolkata Police over multiple cases, has yet to comment on these allegations.
