Priyanka Gandhi Vadra took a swipe at Prime Minister Narendra Modi and questioned why he was seeking votes on the basis of 'mangalsutra', 'bhains' (buffalo) and religion. In an interview with media, Priyanka Gandhi said if PM Modi was confident of his government's performance, he should seek votes on the basis of the work he has done in the past 10 years.
In a no-holds barred attack on PM Modi, the Congress general secretary said unemployment was at its peak in 45 years.
"Why are you (PM Modi) asking for votes on the basis of mangalsutra, bhains, and religion? Why doesn't PM Modi tell the people what work he has done in the past 10 years?" Gandhi said.
The remark was a reference to PM Modi's speech in which he said the Congress's agenda was to redistribute the country's wealth among "infiltrators" and that "they won't even leave your mangalsutras" if voted to power.
Days later, Priyanka shot back, saying that her mother Sonia Gandhi's mangalsutra was sacrificed for the sake of the country.
In another rally in Gujarat's Banaskantha, PM Modi warned the voters that the Congress would snatch "your bhains (buffaloes)" if it won the polls. "If you have two buffaloes, the Congress will take away one if it wins the Lok Sabha elections," the Prime Minister had said.
In the interview, Priyanka also attacked the BJP over the Agnipath recruitment scheme for the Army, saying it had dashed the hopes of the aspirants.
Sharpening her attack against the BJP over inflation and price rise, Priyanka said it affected the women of the country the most. "Today, if a woman is going to the shop to buy five things, she comes back after buying two. This has created nervousness among women," she further said.
She also mocked the PM's call for a 'Viksit Bharat' or a developed India by 2047.
"PM Modi gave the call of 'Sabka saath, sabka vikas' 10 years ago. Then why didn't he make the country developed in the last 10 years? Several schemes, like the Ujjwala LPG scheme, were a UPA-era scheme," Priyanka Gandhi said.
