Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Friday received a call from the Bangladesh interim government's chief adviser, Muhammad Yunus. PM Modi has been assured of the safety and security of the Hindus and minorities in the country. PM Modi took it to X as he mentioned that they exchanged views on the prevailing situation.
Taking to X, PM Modi wrote, "Received a telephone call from Professor Muhammad Yunus, @ChiefAdviserGoB (Chief adviser of government of Bangladesh) Exchanged views on the prevailing situation. Reiterated India's support for a democratic, stable, peaceful and progressive Bangladesh. He assured protection, safety and security of Hindus and all minorities in Bangladesh.
In a release, the PMO stated that both leaders have discussed ways to take the bilateral relationship forward in line with respective national priorities.
In his Independence Day speech on Thursday, PM Modi said that 140 crore Indians are concerned about the safety of Hindus and other minorities in Bangladesh amid unrest. The PM's statement came amid several incidents of violence against minorities since the ouster of former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina.
The Prime Minister said that India's wish is always for its neighbouring nations to "walk the path of prosperity and peace".
Bangladesh has been embroiled in unrest since June due to massive protests, which initially started as agitation over quotas in government jobs but soon turned anti-government.
Following the ouster of Sheikh Hasina as the Prime Minister of Bangladesh and her escape to India, there have been multiple incidents of violence against minorities, especially Hindus, in the country.
Mobs have vandalised and looted businesses and houses of Hindus, and even lynched them. Nobel Peace laureate Muhammad Yunus, who took over the head of the Bangladesh interim government, has urged the safety of the minorities, stressing that they too are the citizens of the country and enjoy equal rights.
