Mihir Shah, the main accused in the Worli hit-and-run case, was sent to judicial custody for 14 days on Tuesday. Shah was arrested on July 9, days after he allegedly rammed his BMW into a scooter, killing a woman.
Mihir, 24, is the son of Rajesh Shah, a Shiv Sena leader from the Eknath Shinde camp. Rajesh Shah was also arrested by the Worli police but was later released on bail.
On July 7, a BMW hit a couple on a scooter on Annie Besant Road in Worli. The scooter dragged the woman, Kaveri Nakhwa, for nearly 1.5 km. Nakhwa died in the incident while her husband Pradip suffered injuries.
Mihir Shah was allegedly behind the wheel when the car rammed into the scooter. His driver, Rajrishi Bidawat was allegedly in the passenger's seat at the time of accident. According to police, after the crash, Bidawat swapped driver’s seat with Mihir Shah allegedly at the instruction of Rajesh Shah.
Following the accident, Mihir Shah shaved his beard in an attempt to disguise himself while on the run from the police. However, he was arrested on July 9 from a resort in Virar, a suburb near Mumbai.
According to the police sources, Mihir Shah was under the influence of alcohol at the time of the accident.
Sources said that Mihir had partied with his friends at a bar in Juhu before the accident. He then drove his friends back home in a Mercedes before taking the BMW for a "joy ride" on Marine Drive, sources said. Near Haji Ali, he reportedly switched seats with his driver and took the wheel, sources added.
The police have registered a case of culpable homicide against Mihir. His driver is also under arrest in the case and was sent to 14-day judicial custody on July 11.
Mihir's father, Rajesh Shah, was arrested on July 7 in connection with the case. The BMW involved in the case was registered under his name. Rajesh Shah was granted bail by the court on July 8.
