West Bengal Governor CV Ananda Bose on Friday lashed out at Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee over the ongoing protest in the state in view of the gruesome rape and murder of a trainee doctor at a Kolkata hospital and said that the Trinamool supremo is behaving like Jekyll and Hyde.

Bose said that Mamata Banerjee's demand to hang the accused first and then continue the trial is the biggest joke he has heard in recent times.

"The Chief Minister saying hang the person and then continue the trial sounds like a Roman emperor's voice. The Chief Minister is behaving like Jekyll and Mr Hyde and people know who is what," Bose said.

When asked about his views on the police investigation in the case, Bose said that he had already indicated his displeasure with the current police hierarchy in Kolkata.

"I have already written a lengthy letter to the Chief Minister after the incident which took place at the KG Kar Hospital and suggested to her the action that needs to be taken and also demanded a report from her under Article 167 of the Constitution. Notably, in the last 5 years, I have sent 30 such letters to which no replies were given. This is unconstitutional," the Governor said.

When asked about the opposition's demand to impose a President's rule in West Bengal, CV Ananda Bose said, "The Constitution of India is strong enough to take care of any exigencies. I am watching the situation and will send a well-thought-out report to the Government of India, as and when it is required.

Speaking about the growing demand for justice to the Kolkata rape and murder victim, Governor Bose said that the matter is already in the High Court and justice will be given to the deceased.

"In this particular case, I see a definite failure by the police. People are now doubting who the cop is, and who is the thief? I am not satisfied with the tardy way the police have handled this case," CV Ananda Bose added.

Meanwhile, resident doctors are continuing with their indefinite strike to express solidarity with the nationwide agitation against the rape and murder of a post-graduate trainee in Kolkata’s RG Kar Medical College and Hospital on August 9.

The emergency ward, nursing station, medicine store and parts of the outpatient department of RG Kar Medical College and Hospital were vandalised by miscreants last night amid midnight protests by women across West Bengal condemning the incident.
