A team of the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) has arrived in Kolkata to investigate the rape and murder of a trainee doctor at the RG Kar Medical College and Hospital, a day after the Calcutta High Court ordered the transfer of the case to the central agency.

Meanwhile, resident doctors and medics at the AIIMS Delhi, The Indira Gandhi Hospital and other resident doctors' associations, including the Federation of All India Medical Associations (FAIMA), said on Tuesday that their demonstration against the horrific rape and murder would continue until a central law to curb attacks on medical personnel is implemented.

On Monday, the Federation of Resident Doctors' Association (FORDA) decided to call off its strike after meeting Union Health Minister JP Nadda accepted their demands, including providing a safe working environment.

Here are the latest updates in the Kolkata doctor rape-murder:

  • In a statement on Tuesday, the AIIMS said that its community "unanimously decided" that all resident doctors would continue their strike. They reiterated their demands, including the implementation of a Central Protection Act, while welcoming the CBI inquiry as well. Emergency services, ICUs, emergency procedures and emergency OT will remain operational, the statement added.

  • The Federation of All India Medical Association (FAIMA) has also said that it will continue with its protest. In a letter to JP Nadda, the association named 32 other Resident Doctors' Associations (RDA) that would also continue with their demonstration against the 31-year-old trainee doctor's rape and murder. These doctors have also demanded the implementation of a Central Protection Act.

  • Two CBI officers took documents pertaining to the rape-murder of the trainee doctor from the Kolkata Police on Tuesday. The Calcutta High Court had directed the city police to hand over the case diary to the federal agency by Tuesday evening, and other documents by today.

  • The parents of the trainee doctor have revealed that they were initially told by a hospital official that their daughter died by suicide and were made to wait outside the hospital for three hours before they could see her body.

  • A four-page postmortem report of the trainee doctor revealed that she was throttled to death. Her thyroid cartilage was broken due to strangling and a deep wound was found in her private parts. Sources said the rape and murder likely happened between 3 am and 5 am on August 9.

  • The body of the trainee doctor was found in the hospital's seminar rooms of the Bengal government-run hospital on August 9 morning. A civic volunteer with Kolkata Police, Sanjoy Roy, has been arrested in connection with the case. He was stationed at the police outpost at the RG Kar Medical College and Hospital, and had access to all departments. He was arrested based on CCTV visuals that showed him entering the building where the doctor was found murdered.

  • The Calcutta High Court came down heavily on the RG Kar Medical College and Hospital for "serious lapses" in case of the rape and murder of the trainee doctor, while transferring the case to the CBI. A division bench headed by Chief Justice TS Sivagnanam rapped the former principal of the college for not being "proactive".

  • Sandip Ghosh resigned as the Principal of the RG Kar Medical College and Hospital on Monday. However, he was made the principal of the Calcutta National Medical College and Hospital (CNMCH) - another famous, government-run college-hospital in Kolkata - within a few hours. The appointment triggered further protests by doctors.

  • During Tuesday's hearing, the Calcutta High Court, however, sent Sandip Ghosh to indefinite leave, stating that he should be at home and not working anywhere. The bench said that the principal is the one was who is responsible for all doctors working in the hospital. "The principal of RG Kar College, Sandeep Ghosh, should go on leave today...," it added.

  • Civic volunteer Sanjoy Roy has confessed to the crime and asked police to hang him following his arrest, sources told India Today. He has also confessed to previous violent behaviour towards his mother, sister, and wife. Police sources further said that his mother-in-law previously filed a complaint against him for physically abusing his wife.
