Civic volunteer Sanjoy Roy, who was arrested for raping and murdering a trainee doctor at Kolkata's RG Kar Medical College and Hospital, has confessed to the crime and asked police to hang him following his arrest, sources told India Today. "Mujhe fansi de dijiye (Hang me please)", Roy told police during interrogation after he was arrested on Saturday.

Roy has also confessed to previous violent behaviour towards his mother, sister, and wife. Police sources said the accused's mother-in-law had previously filed a complaint against him at Kalighat Police Station for physically abusing his wife.

The body of the post-graduate trainee doctor was found in the seminar room of the West Bengal government-run hospital on Friday morning. Roy was arrested from his home on Saturday and has been booked under sections 64 (rape) and 103 (murder) of the BNS.

Roy was stationed at the police outpost at RG Kar Hospital and had access to all departments. He was arrested on the basis of CCTV footage that showed him entering the building where the doctor was found murdered.

The police have seized his mobile phone and are set to retrieve data from it on Tuesday. "We will soon retrieve the data from his phone. Not only the doctors, we have also questioned and collected statements of five police personnel who were posted in the hospital," an official told media.

Police have said the accused was allegedly addicted to pornography and was known as a womaniser, PTI reported.

"The pornography content on his mobile phone was quite disturbing and violent. We wonder about the state of his mind, as watching such things is quite unnatural," a police officer said.

West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee gave a stern warning to the Kolkata police, stating that the investigation would be transferred to the CBI if the police are unable to crack the case by Sunday, August 18.
