Two people were injured when a temporary gate collapsed at a cultural event attended by West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee in Kolkata on Wednesday, news agency PTI reported.

The report added that the event, organised by the Information and Cultural Affairs Department at Dhanadhanya Auditorium, was held to commemorate the 44th death anniversary of the legendary actor Uttam Kumar.

A hoarding collapsed onto people in front of an auditorium in the city just moments before chief minister Mamata Banerjee was due to arrive for an award ceremony, according to police.

The incident occurred in the afternoon near the entrance of the Dhono Dhanyo Auditorium in the Alipore area. The injured individuals were transported to the nearby SSKM Hospital.

"Their condition is stated to be critical. We are trying to ascertain whether this was an accident or a security lapse," a senior police officer stated.

Following the incident, several other hoardings near the auditorium were removed, the officer added.
