Former High Court judge and BJP candidate, Abhijit Gangopadhyay, has been served a show cause notice by the Election Commission over “improper, undignified” remarks against West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee

The Election Commission’s action followed after the Trinamool Congress filed a complaint against Gangopadhyay, saying that the "denigrating statement(s) being made by him is a clear portrayal of his indecent behaviour and misogynistic mindset".

TMC quoted Gangopadhyay speech where he said: “Mamata Banerjee, how much are you being sold for? Your rate is 10 lakhs, why? Because you're getting your make up done by Keya Seth? Mamata Banerjee, is she even a woman? I keep wondering sometimes.”

Gangopadhyay had made the alleged remarks against Mamata Banerjee while addressing a public meeting in Haldia on May 15.

"Gangopahdyay's vulgar and uncouth remarks are completely beyond the grounds of decency and morality. They not only lack decorum but also exhibits a blatant disregard of the only lady Chief Minister, Mamata Banerjee," the TMC said in its complaint.

The Commission in its notice noted that “the comment is improper, injudicious, beyond dignity in every sense of the term, in bad taste“ and violative of the provisions of the Model Code of Conduct.

The Commission has sought a response from Gangopadhyay by May 20.
