Claiming that 50 soldiers have died in the past 32 months in terror attacks in Jammu and Kashmir, former Chief Minister Mehbooba Mufti on Tuesday demanded the sacking of DGP RR Swain and called him a "political fixer". Mehbooba's salvo comes a day after the J&K DGP accused political parties in the Valley of facilitating Pakistan's "infiltration" into civil society.

Seeking accountability for the recent spate of terror attacks on Army personnel, Mufti said, "Heads should have rolled by now... the DGP (RR Swain) should have been sacked by now."

An Army captain and three soldiers were among five security personnel dead in an encounter with terrorists in Doda on Monday evening. The attack came days after five Army personnel died when terrorists ambushed an Army convoy in Kathua district.

"What has happened in Doda is highly condemnable. We lost our brave soldiers and officers in this attack... There is no accountability. The incumbent DGP is more busy fixing things politically. He is more into how to crush the PDP and how to harass the people," she said.

Mufti's statement came after the DGP claimed that the leaders of mainstream parties in Jammu and Kashmir were cultivating leaders of terror networks for political gains. The DGP also said Pakistan had infiltrated all important aspects of civil society in Jammu and Kashmir.

Continuing her tirade against the J&K top cop, Mufti claimed he was treating the local people as Pakistanis and had alienated them.

"Passport and antecedents' verification has been weaponised, UAPA is being invoked against more and more people, the business community is being harassed, our clerics are also not spared. They are being blackmailed. Bar Association people are being put behind bars," she asked.

"We do not need a 'fixer' here, we need a DGP... No one worked on communal lines, but today it is done on communal lines. Employees are being sacked on charges of corruption. Most of them are from the majority community," she alleged.

Mufti questioned the work done by the DGP and the central government in the past six years.

"Our jawans are being killed every day on the border, and there is no investigation on the same on the part of the government of India. They rather blame the mainstream parties," Mehbooba Mufti said.

"The government of India has been ruling Jammu and Kashmir for the past six years, but what have they done? They put innocent people, be it a local, or a journalist, in jail," Mufti claimed.

On Monday, speaking at a function at IIM Jammu, DGP Swain had accused leaders of mainstream political parties of visiting the homes of killed terrorists and expressing sympathy in public.

"Pakistan successfully infiltrated all important aspects of civil society, thanks to so-called mainstream and regional politics in the Valley. There is ample evidence to show that many had owned the art of running with the hare and hunting with hounds, which left both the common person and the security bewildered, frightened and confused," DGP Swain said.

The DGP said the Jamiat-i-Islami provided religious and ideological justification to the terrorists.

"It was an open secret that the Jamiat network was not only able to sabotage the government efforts to normalise the situation but also had a terror finance network that played a big role in mobilising street protests," he said.
