Two women were booked in Meerut’s Kankerkheda for allegedly burning five stray puppies alive by pouring petrol over them, police officials reported on Friday.
According to locals, the two accused, identified as Shobha and Aarti, who are sisters-in-law, were allegedly frustrated by the noise made by the puppies.
The case was registered at Meerut's Kankerkheda police station after Anshumali Vashishth, general secretary of the Animal Care Society, filed a complaint.
The incident occurred on November 5 as per the complaint.
When local residents confronted the women, the accused reportedly responded with hostile remarks. The residents then called the police and the police visited the site but then left. It was the residents who later buried the puppies' bodies.
When no immediate action was taken, Anshumali, along with local business leaders, went to the Kankerkheda police station in Meerut on Friday to file another complaint regarding the incident.
Station House Officer Jitendra Kumar said that the women have been charged under Section 325 of the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Act, which addresses mischief by killing or maiming animals. “Further legal action will follow upon investigation,” Kumar said.
Vashishth reported that a stray dog had recently given birth to five puppies.
In response to the incident, representatives from the Meerut Vyapar Mandal met with Circle Officer Daurala Shuchita Singh, on Friday. They sought her attention on the matter and demanded strict action against those responsible.
Meerut SP Ayush Vikram said that following the complaint, the puppies' post-mortem had been conducted, and a case was registered against the two named women. Further action will be taken based on the ongoing investigation.
