Dehradun: A gay couple in Uttarakhand’s Udham Singh Nagar recently approached the Uttarakhand high court to get protection from their families who are opposed to their relationships and also against their decision to live together. After getting notified for the situation from the couple’s lawyer Vikas Anand, the High Court’s bench comprising of Chief Justice RS Chauhan and Justice NS Dhanik on Thursday ordered the district’s senior superintendent of police (SSP) to provide police protection to the couple, who deliberately wants to stay together.Notices have also been issued to family members from both sides (two members from each side), the couple’s lawyer Vikas Anand said. The Supreme Court in 2018 ruled down Section 377 of the penal code and said that sex between consenting adults was not an offence anymore. Anand said the top court also ruled that any discrimination on the basis of sexual orientation violates fundamental rights.Similarly, in June 2018, the Uttarakhand High Court underscored that what if the law does not recognise gay marriage but consensual relationship between the people with same sex was not a crime or illegal.
