Two members of a right-wing organisation, All India Hindu Mahasabha, were arrested by Agra Police on Saturday for allegedly offering 'gangajal' at the Taj Mahal in the holy month of Sawan. A video of the incident has gone viral.
The men, identified as Vinesh and Shyam, entered the monument after purchasing a ticket and then poured the holy water at the doors of the cellar inside the main tomb. Right-wing organisations claim that the Taj Mahal is not a mausoleum but a Shiva Temple known as 'TejoMahalay'.
A video of the incident shows a man pouring water from a plastic bottle at the doors of the cellar leading to the basement of the Taj Mahal, which has the graves of Mughal emperor Shah Jahan and his wife Mumtaz Mahal.
They were arrested by the Central Industrial Security Force, which is responsible for security of the Taj Mahal. A case was also registered against them at the Tajganj police station. The case has been taken over by Agra Police.
Speaking about the incident, DCP, Agra city, Suraj Rai said, "Today, the CISF, which looks after the security of the Taj Mahal, informed the local police that two men who had come inside the Taj Mahal for a visit were seen pouring water from a Bisleri bottle in the premises. The CISF took these two men into custody. Necessary action is being taken against them."
Meanwhile, the spokesperson of the All India Hindu Mahasabha, Sanjay Jaat, demanded the immediate release of the duo.
"Our organisation will continue to hold such programmes. The police have two of our workers. The police should release them unconditionally. In the past, the police have released people who mistakenly offered prayers in the Taj Mahal," Jaat said.
