Schools shut in Chennai due to heavy rain, showers expected across Tamil Nadu

Heavy rainfall continues to affect Chennai and surrounding districts in Tamil Nadu. In wake of this, a holiday has been announced for schools and colleges in Mayiladuthurai district and Karaikal, Puducherry due to the rains. In Cuddalore, Ariyalur and Perambalur districts, a holiday has been declared for just schools.

The Regional Meteorological Centre has put out a yellow alert. The forecast has said heavy rain is likely to occur at isolated places in districts of Chennai, Chengalpattu, Tiruvallur, Kancheepuram, Ranipet, Kanyakumari, Tirunelveli, Thoothukudi, Tenkasi, Ramanathapuram, Virudhunagar and Madurai districts.

As a low-pressure system builds over the Bay of Bengal, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a yellow alert in several districts along coastal Tamil Nadu for the rest of the week.

The IMD’s warning also includes a yellow alert with heavy rainfall predicted in more than 15 districts across the state through the week.

The weather department has issued alerts across the state till November 15. The low-pressure system over the Bay of Bengal could intensify the rains, bringing more than 10 cm of rainfall to Chennai and nearby districts of Kancheepuram and Thiruvallur.

For the next two days, the IMD has predicted scattered rainfall and thunderstorms, and mostly cloudy skies for Chennai. The city has seen a surplus of rainfall since October. At 43 cm, it is one per cent above normal levels.

Coastal areas, including Puducherry, Karaikal, and stretches from Thiruvallur to Ramanathapuram, have been bracing for rainfall between 64.5 mm and 115.5 mm, with wind speeds of up to 55 kmph.
