A man from Hamirpur in Himachal Pradesh fell victim to an online scam that lured him into believing that he had won a prize as part of a 'Kaun Banega Crorepati' (KBC) contest. The scammers tricked him into believing that he had won a Nexon car, only to swindle Rs 11 lakh from him.

The scam started with the victim coming across a web link of what seemed to be a KBC contest. After clicking on the link and answering some questions, the victim was told he had won a Nexon car.

Then, he was told that he had the option to take away Rs 8.5 lakh in cash instead of the car. For this, the scammer asked him for a registration fee of Rs 1,200, which he transferred. They continued to demand money over multiple transactions, eventually scamming the man out of Rs 11 lakh.

When the victim realised he had been scammed, he reported the incident to the local cyber police station. After registering the complaint, the police managed to freeze some bank accounts into which the money had been transferred and put an amount of Rs 2 lakh on hold.

Assistant Superintendent of Police Rajesh Kumar said that the Cyber Crime Police is conducting a detailed investigation and is working to recover the remaining amount.
