Chennai: Several parts of Chennai, including residential areas, experienced a massive power outage on Thursday night following a fire accident near the Manali substation in the northern part of the city. According to Tamil Nadu Generation and Distribution Corporation (TANGEDCO) Managing Director Rajesh Lakhani, the fire broke out inside the substation. Fire tenders were immediately dispatched to the scene to extinguish the flames.
Chennai Power Cut: Fire Not Caused By Overloading
Lakhani clarified that the reason of the fire was not overload, as the demand was lower than it typically is in summer, adding that the flames might have been cause by an equipment malfunction.

He further stated that 50 percent of the city’s electrical supply, specially in areas such as RA Puram, Mylapore, and Pulianthope, would be restored very soon as teams are trying to establish a bypass line. He added that the remaining electrical supply would also be restored soon.

Quite a few folks from Chennai turned to Twitter showcasing the ongoing power disruption in their city. According to a resident of the city, a fire at the Manali substation is causing power breakdowns across diverse parts of the city.
The second user asked for updates from the Tamil Nadu Electricity Board and the estimated time for power restoration.
Another user tweeted that the streetlights on Anna Salai Road were not working.
“elderly people suffer from heavy palpitation and BP (Blood Pressure) issues. And I heard that a lot of areas in Chennai don’t have power. Please sort it out!,” another Chennai resident said.
