An 11-year-old died after a boy, who was playing Goddess Kali, slit his throat in Uttar Pradesh's Kanpur on Wednesday.

After the incident, the police reached the spot and took the 14-year-old boy and two other children for questioning.

According to the police, the incident happened in Bambhiyanpur village in the Bilhaur area of Kanpur, where a Bhagwat Katha was organised at the house of one Subhash Saini.

As part of the programme, a tableau was taken out in which the children were playing several characters of Bhagwat Katha. During the event, the child, who was playing the character of Goddess Kali struck the neck of the boy playing a 'demon' with a knife.

Following the incident, the injured child was rushed to a nearby hospital in serious condition, where the doctors declared him dead.

The villagers said the boy had been directed to use a trident for mock-slaying the child who was playing the role of a 'demon'. But, he brought a sharp knife after failing to find a trident.

Upon receiving information about the incident, the local police reached the spot, sent the body of the child for postmortem and detained the accused for questioning.

Speaking about the incident, DCP Vijay Dhull of Kanpur Police said that an FIR has been registered against the accused for causing death by rash or negligent act not amounting to culpable homicide after a complaint by the father of the deceased.

The boy will be presented to the Juvenile Court and further action will be taken in accordance with the law, he added.
