Kanpur Mayor Pramila Pandey ordered the demolition of several meat and fish shops after a girl was mauled to death by stray dogs on Sunday. The Mayor stated that it was due to such shops that stray dogs became aggressive.
Following the incident, Mayor Pramila Pandey rushed to console the grieving family in the affected neighbourhood.
Angry residents, citing ongoing illicit activities in the area, criticised the lack of police intervention and expressed frustration, stating, 'While we work hard to earn our livelihoods, no action is taken, and illicit activities continue.'
After meeting with the residents, the Mayor promised that strict action would be taken against those who indulge in illegal activities.
Meanwhile, during the demolition, the shopkeepers protested and demanded that the bulldozers be called off. The Mayor paid no heed to their request.
Taking stern action against 44 shops, the Mayor warned of severe consequences if these shops reopened.
According to the Municipal Corporation report, the main reason behind the aggressive behaviour of dogs is the scraps found at meat and fish shops, which agitates the animals upon consumption.
According to the Chief Medical Officer, consumption of contaminated meat invokes aggressive behaviour in dogs, leading to such incidents.
The Municipal Corporation has urged residents to provide water to stray dogs and, if possible, keep water outside homes for them to drink.
