A Delhi government officer was arrested for rash driving after his car collided with a motorbike, igniting a fire that destroyed both vehicles early on Sunday, police said.
The crash occurred around 2 a.m. on Rani Jhansi Road in the Jhandewalan area, police said. The driver, identified as RC Meena, an assistant commissioner in the city’s Excise Department, was uninjured but the motorcycle rider suffered minor injuries and was hospitalised.
Police said Meena’s Creta SUV was speeding when it hit the Rapido bike, dragging it for a distance before both vehicles burst into flames. Firefighters extinguished the blaze.
A medical examination determined Meena was intoxicated at the time of the crash, police said. Investigation also revealed that the Rapido driver did not have a licence.
A case was registered against Meena on charges of rash driving and causing an accident.
Meena was arrested but later released on bail.
