The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) on Monday got permission from a Kolkata court to conduct a lie detector test of Sanjay Roy, the accused in the rape-murder of a 31-year-old postgraduate trainee doctor at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital.
Roy, a civic volunteer, was arrested a day after the body of the doctor was found in the seminar hall of the RG Kar Medical College and Hospital on August 9.
A preliminary investigation into the matter revealed that the accused, Sanjay Roy, consumed alcohol before the crime took place, said police sources.
At around 11 pm on the day the crime took place, Sanjay went to a place behind the hospital to drink alcohol, sources said, adding that he used to watch porn while drinking there.
Police sources also said that Roy entered the hospital premises several times that night. The accused, however, had no such reason to be in the department that night, the police said earlier.
Investigators have described him as having a "perverted mind", pointing out that the type of pornographic material he consumed was not of the sort "people usually watch".
Further investigation revealed that after committing the crime, Roy attempted to destroy evidence. Police have found indications that he tried to wash away bloodstains from the scene. The CCTV footage also shows Roy leaving the seminar room at around 4:45 am.
Amid nationwide protests by the doctors demanding justice for the victim, lawyers practising at the Calcutta High Court took out a rally demanding "punishment to the real culprits". Several senior lawyers, including former West Bengal Advocate General Jayanta Mitra, joined the protest march.
The lawyers, carrying placards and festoons demanding "punishment to the real culprits" walked into the rally near the high court during the lunch recess.
