A government school teacher was arrested in Tamil Nadu's Coimbatore district for allegedly sexually assaulting nine girl students.
A case has also been registered against two female teachers and the school's principal for not reporting the incident to the police despite receiving a complaint against the 54-year-old accused.
According to the police, the incident came to light when the girl students complained to District Child Protection Unit (DCPU) officials when they reached the school, located in Coimbatore's Sirumugai area, to conduct an awareness session on child sexual abuse and child marriage in the school.
The girl students, who were class 7 and 8 students, complained that the accused, identified as Natarajan, was sexually assaulting them for months. They also told them that they complained about the sexual assault to their class teachers, Geetha and Shyamala, but no action was taken.
In its investigation, the District Child Protection Unit also found out that an inquiry was conducted by the school's Principal Jamuna and another teacher, Shanmugavadivu, but no action was taken against the accused teacher.
Based on the District Child Protection Unit's complaint, a case was registered against the accused teacher under several sections of the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) and he was arrested along with other teachers and the school's principal.
