At least seven people were killed, and several others were injured on Monday after a blast at a coal mine in West Bengal's Birbhum district.

According to sources, the incident occurred at Gangaramchak Mining Private Limited colliery, located in Birbhum's Lokpur area, while carrying out an explosion to extract coal.

After the explosion, several workers and senior officials of Gangaramchak Mining Private Limited ran towards safe places. Visuals from the ground after the incident showed the bodies of the people lying on the ground and damaged vehicles that were parked near the coal mine.

Upon receiving an alert about the incident, local police reached the spot and rushed the injured people to a nearby medical facility for treatment.

Earlier in January 2023, several people who were illegally digging a coal mine in West Bengal's Kulti were trapped after the roof of the mine collapsed on them. The mine belonged to Bharat Coking Coal Limited (BCCL), and the people trapped were allegedly mining coal from the mine illegally.
