Several people were trapped after a three-storey building collapsed in Navi Mumbai on Saturday.
The incident happened in the Shahbaz village amid heavy rain in parts of Maharashtra.
Teams of the police, fire brigade, and National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) were on the spot, as efforts were on to rescue those trapped under the debris of the collapsed building.
According to the details, as many as 24 families resided in the building.
Talking to the media, Kailas Shinde, Navi Mumbai Municipal Corporation Commissioner said the building collapsed at nearly 5 am today.
He also said two people were rescued, while many others were likely to be trapped.
"The building collapsed around 5 am. It is a G+3 building. Two people have been rescued and two are likely trapped. The NDRF team is here, rescue operation is underway," Shinde told the media.
Purushottam Jadhav, Navi Mumbai Deputy Fire Officer told the media, "We received a call about a building collapse at 4.50 am. Two people have been rescued. Two people are likely to be trapped and a rescue operation is underway to rescue them."
RAIN ALERT IN 8 MAHARASHTRA DISTRICTS
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued an orange alert for Raigad, Ratnagiri, Sindhudurg, Pune and Satara districts of Maharashtra for Saturday, indicating the possibility of heavy to very heavy showers, while Mumbai saw a lull in rain activity on Friday.
After nearly two days of intense showers, Mumbai was largely rain-free and the IMD has issued a yellow alert for the financial capital and adjoining Thane district for Saturday, predicting heavy showers in isolated areas.
According to the IMD, an orange alert has also been issued for Chandrapur, Gondia and Gadchiroli districts.
The districts with orange alert are expected to receive heavy to very heavy rainfall in isolated places.
There is no orange alert for any district of Maharashtra from July 28 to 30, the IMD said.
