At least 10 people were killed dead as a tempo traveller carrying 26 passengers fell into a deep gorge in Uttarakhand's Rudraprayag district on Saturday. As many as 16 people were wounded in the accident, police said.

At around 11 am today, the vehicle skidded off the road and fell about 250 meters down to the banks of the Alaknanda River on the Badrinath National Highway.

A rescue operation was launched, and the injured have been hospitalised.

Out of the 16 injured, seven people have been airlifted to AIIMS Rishikesh, and nine are admitted to Rudraprayag District Hospital, officials said.

Expressing grief about the accident, Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami said that the District Magistrate had been ordered to investigate the incident.

"I pray to God to grant the souls of the departed a place at His feet and provide strength for the bereaved family to bear this immense pain. I pray to Baba Kedar for the speedy recovery of the injured," he wrote on his official handle.

The local administration and SDRF teams are engaged in relief and rescue operations.

The passengers were traveling from Delhi/Ghaziabad to Chopta Tungnath. The cause of the accident is yet to be ascertained.
