Actor-turned-author Twinkle Khanna shared a cryptic post on Instagram Thursday regarding her surname. In the post, she drew a line across her name and wrote below it, 'Kumar's plus 1.' The internet reacted, with many users speculating that Khanna is commenting on the government's 'maiden surname' rule, requiring married women to obtain an NOC from their husbands to legally change their surnames back to their maiden names.
The writer's comment box was flooded with all sorts of reactions from users. One person wrote, "This was so triggering." Another mentioned, "Hahahaha so gonna copy this. Absolutely genius." Meanwhile, many wondered what the post was about.
Earlier, Trinamool MP Saket Gokhale had criticised the rule in parliament.
"What the hell is 'husband's permission' for a woman choosing to change her own name?" he said. "As an MP, I will do everything I can to ensure that this misogynist rule is struck down and withdrawn," he added.
The government notification had also been challenged by a woman before the Delhi High Court.
