Veteran actor Mithun Chakraborty on Monday said that he was at a loss for words after the government announced that he would be honoured with the prestigious Dadasaheb Phalke Award. Calling himself a "boy from the footpaths of Kolkata," the 74-year-old said that he could have never imagined being bestowed with such an honour.
"I have no language to express how I feel. Na main hass sakta hun, na khushi mein ro sakta hun (I cannot smile, nor can I cry in happiness)," Mithun told the news agency ANI.
He added, "I come from the bylanes of Kolkata; I have risen from footpaths. A boy from such a place winning such an honour...I could not have imagined this. I am extremely happy. I dedicate this to my family and my fans across the world."
Information & Broadcasting Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw announced the big honour for Mithun on X on September 30. He wrote, "Mithun Da’s remarkable cinematic journey inspires generations! Honored to announce that the Dadasaheb Phalke Selection Jury has decided to award legendary actor, Sh. Mithun Chakraborty Ji for his iconic contribution to Indian Cinema."
The 74-year-old actor will receive the award at the 70th National Film Awards ceremony, which will be held on October 8, 2024.

Between 1980 and 1990, the actor headlined several films and also came to be known as "Disco Dancer" because of his unique dance style.
