A six-member team from India have secured the best ever performance since India’s debut in 1989 in International Mathematics Olympiad (IMO) 2024.
The six students team of Rushil Mathur(Grade 12 from Mumbai), Ananda Bhaduri(Grade 12 from Guwahati), Adhitya Ganesh(Grade 11 from Pune), Kanav Talwar(Grade 10 from Noida), Arjun Gupta(Grade 12 from Delhi) and Siddharth Choppara(Grade 12 from Pune) was led by Professor Krishnan Sivasubramanian (IIT-Bombay) and Rijul Saini (Former IMO medallist; from Homi Bhabha Centre for Science Education, or HBCSE) as the Deputy Leader.
Rushil Mathur, Ananda Bhaduri, Adithya Ganesh and Kanav Talwar won four gold medals for India, while Arjun Gupta secured a silver medal and Siddharth Choppara received a honourable mention.
The Indian team scored an amazing 167 points, just one mark behind South Korea, where US, China and South Korea took the top three spots.
This outstanding performance of India in this year's Olympiad suppressed the previous best ranking of 7th in 2001 and 1998.
Each team member shared a primary passion in mathematics. Rushil Mathur from Powai, Mumbai currently studying in class 12th and planning to pursue mathematics and computer science from University of Oxford for his Undergraduate studies shared his love for the subject through his personal blogs saying “While i always enjoyed mathematics as a middle schooler, I was first introduced to its vastness and beauty when i began preparing for the mathematics Olympiad.”
Prime Minister Narendra Modi praised and congratulated the team on their remarkable achievement with a post on X saying “this will inspire several other youngsters and help make mathematics even more popular”
