In an unprecedented judgment, the All India Football Federation (AIFF) has banned Indian defender Anwar Ali for four months after finding him guilty of unjustifiably terminating his four-year loan deal with Indian Super League club Mohun Bagan Super Giant (MBSG). Additionally, MBSG will also be receive compensation of Rs 12.90 crore after Anwar ended his contract with the club to sign a new deal with East Bengal.

Both East Bengal and Anwar’s parent club Delhi FC have been banned from registering new players for two transfer windows as well.

Anwar, during the off-season, unilaterally terminated his contract with MBSG and penned a new deal with their arch-rivals East Bengal. However, MBSG claimed the center-half, originally signed with Delhi FC, remains their player since he agreed to a four-year loan deal earlier.

The three parties- Anwar, Delhi FC and MBSG – then approached the AIFF’s Players’ Statue Committee (PSC) seeking a resolution to the stalemate.

“Anwar Ali will serve a four-month sporting ban, while East Bengal and Delhi FC will face two transfer window bans, starting from the January transfer window. All three parties – Anwar Ali, Delhi FC and East Bengal – must pay Rs 12.90 crores in compensation to Mohun Bagan,” the PSC said in its judgement on Tuesday.

Anwar is restricted from playing in official matches for a four-month period which begins from the date of issuance of this order. He recently represented India in the Intercontinental Cup.

The PSC had issued an interim order in August where it mentioned Anwar terminated the agreement “without a just cause” and said he can move on with the signing at his own risk. Later on, he was officially unveiled as East Bengal player.

“With Anwar, we have secured another national team player who will bring invaluable experience to our squad. His quality and physical presence are key to the team we are building for the future,” East Bengal head coach Carles Cuadrat had said.
