Nasa to land Nova-C spacecraft close to Chandrayaan-3 on Moon: All details here

JJ News Desk

Intuitive Machines is preparing to launch its Nova-C lander to the Moon's south pole region, targeting an area not far from where India's Chandrayaan-3 made history.

The mission, known as IM-1, is set to deliver a suite of payloads to a largely uncharted part of the lunar surface, aiming for a soft landing at Malapert A crater.

The significance of this mission lies in its destination: the Moon's south pole, a region that has captivated scientists and space enthusiasts alike.

Malapert A, the chosen landing site, is a satellite crater adjacent to the larger Malapert crater, which spans 69 kilometers.

This area is named after Charles Malapert, a figure from the annals of astronomy, and is composed of lunar highland material akin to that found at the Apollo 16 landing site.

Intuitive Machines' Nova-C lander is poised to touch down approximately 300 kilometers from the Moon's south pole. The proximity of the Malapert Massif, a prominent feature in the region, points to the area's importance; it is one of the 13 candidate locations under consideration for NASA's Artemis III mission.

The selection of this site for the Nova-C lander reflects a strategic interest in exploring and understanding the Moon's polar resources, including potential water ice deposits.

WHAT WILL IM-1 DO ON THE MOON?

The Nova-C lander will carry five Nasa payloads and additional commercial cargo, contributing valuable data to our knowledge of the Moon.

This ambitious project by Intuitive Machines follows on the heels of India's Chandrayaan-3 success, which saw the nation become the first to land intact in the lunar south polar region.

The Nova-C lander aims to further unravel the mysteries of the Moon's south pole, building upon the legacy of Chandrayaan-3 and setting the stage for the next chapter in lunar exploration.
