The 2023 Nobel Prize in Chemistry was awarded to Moungi Bawendi, Louis E Brus and Alexey Ekimov on Wednesday for the discovery and synthesis of quantum dots.

Swedish scientist Hans Ellegren and Johan Åqvist, the chair of the academy’s Nobel committee for chemistry announced the winners in Stockholm.

“The 2023 Nobel Prize in Chemistry rewards the discovery and development of quantum dots, nanoparticles so tiny that their size determines their properties,” the Nobel Committee said in a post on social media site X.

Carolyn R. Bertozzi, Morten Meldal and K. Barry Sharpless won the Nobel Prize in Chemistry last year “for the development of click chemistry and bioorthogonal chemistry”.

The first Nobel Prize in Chemistry was awarded to Jacobus H. van ‘t Hoff in 1901 for his work on chemical dynamics and osmotic pressure.

The Nobel Prize for Chemistry is one of the most prestigious annual awards given to scientists and researchers for making outstanding contributions to the field of chemistry. This Nobel, like the other Nobel Prizes, was established by the will of Alfred Nobel in 1895. This prize has been annually awarded since 1901.
