'You're a woman, do you know anything?': Nitish Kumar's remark sparks row

JJ News Desk

Bihar Assembly witnessed a ruckus today as the opposition members gathered in the well of the House. They were demanding that the state's amended reservation laws be included in the Ninth Schedule of the Constitution, thereby shielding them from judicial review.

Nitish Kumar addressed the assembly, reminding the members of his role in initiating a caste survey, which led to an increase in quotas for Scheduled Castes (SCs), Scheduled Tribes (STs), Other Backward Classes (OBCs), and the extremely backward classes.

"The Patna High Court has set aside the reservation laws, and we have approached the Supreme Court. A formal request has also been made to the Centre to place these laws in the Ninth Schedule," Kumar stated.

Despite the Chief Minister's explanations, the opposition members continued their protest, chanting slogans.

Nitish Kumar then lost his cool and raised his voice at one of the legislators.

"You are a woman, do you know anything? Do you realise that it was only after I assumed power that women started getting their due in Bihar?" Nitish Kumar said, as he attacked his former allies.

Nitish Kumar, who had split with NDA to join hands with RJD in Bihar in 2022, did a U-turn in 2024 and went back into NDA hold.

RJD leader and former deputy Chief Minister Tejashwi Yadav slammed Nitish Kumar for the misogynistic comment.

“Making cheap, unwanted, uncivilized, rude and low-level comments on women has become a habit Chief Minister Nitish Kumar. This is a very serious and worrying issue for the state,” Tejashwi Yadav said.

A few days ago, the CM had made a lewd comment on the beauty of a BJP woman MLA from the tribal class. Today, he made a comment on two-time Scheduled Caste woman MLA Rekha Paswan,” Tejashwi Yadav pointed out.
