Sanjay Roy, the prime accused in the rape and murder case of a trainee doctor at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital in Kolkata, has once again claimed that he is innocent. While speaking before a court for the first time, Roy said, "I am innocent and I do not know anything regarding the case."
This comes a day after the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) charged Roy, who used to work with Kolkata Police as a contractual staff, with the rape and murder of the trainee doctor. The incident took place when the victim was resting in the hospital's seminar room during a break on August 9.
The 33-year-old Roy initially confessed to the crime after being arrested on August 10. However, he made a U-turn during the polygraph test, claiming he was being framed and was innocent.
The CBI, in its charge sheet, stated that Roy committed the crime alone and ruled out the possibility of a gang rape. The CBI cited a total of 11 pieces of evidence against Roy to prove his direct involvement in the murder of the trainee doctor.
In the charge sheet filed before a special court in Kolkata, the CBI claimed that several facts, circumstances, oral and documentary evidence and forensic/scientific reports, prove that the crime was committed by Roy inside the seminar hall of the medical facility.
The CBI said that Roy's presence at the hospital on the intervening night of August 8 and 9, was proved by the location of his mobile phone as per CDR (call details record). The short hair recovered from the scene of the crime matched with that of accused Sanjay Roy during the forensic examination by the Central Forensic Science Laboratory (CFSL).
The CBI cited pairing of one Bluetooth earphone found at the scene of the crime with the seized mobile phone of Roy as another piece of evidence against him. Furthermore, the injuries found on his body are blunt force injuries consistent with the marks of resistance/struggle by the victim, CBI stated.
The probe agency had earlier stated that the crime scene had already been altered when it took over the case, alluding to Roy's association with a few senior Kolkata Police officers.
The Calcutta High Court on August 13 ordered the transfer of the probe from the Kolkata Police to the CBI.
