Pune teen was driving in 'full senses', bid made to pin blame on driver: Top cop

Pune Police commissioner Amitesh Kumar on Friday said the 17-year-old boy was in his "full senses" while driving the Porsche that rammed into a bike on May 19, immediately killing two people. Addressing a press conference, the Pune top cop said an attempt was made to show that the teen, son of a prominent real estate developer, was not driving the Porsche and pinned the blame on the family driver.

"There was an attempt to show that the accused was not driving the vehicle and someone else was driving, but they couldn't do that as police investigated," Amitesh Kumar said.

The police chief's statement comes after the teen's family claimed that their driver was behind the wheel when the accident happened on May 19 (Sunday). The family driver, in his first statement, also claimed that he was driving the Porsche when the accident happened.

"We will take action under Section 201 (destruction of evidence) against those persons who tried to show that the accused juvenile was not driving the car and some adult driver was behind the wheels," the Pune police chief said.

The police chief said CCTV footage showed the vehicle was taken out by the accused from his residence.

The accident, which occurred in Kalyani Nagar area, led to the deaths of two young IT professionals - Aneesh Awadhiya and his friend Ashwini Koshta.

The police commissioner also dismissed the opposition's allegations that the 17-year-old boy was served "pizzas and burgers" in custody following the incident.

"We have not seen and nothing has come to our notice regarding any preferential treatment being given at the police station. If any negligence happened by Yerwada police, action will be taken," he further said.

Amid an outrage over the incident, a Pune court cancelled the bail granted to the teen and ordered him to be sent to a juvenile centre.
