BJP President JP Nadda and the party's IT Cell chief Amit Malviya have been summoned by the Bengaluru Police over an 'objectionable post' made by the Karnataka unit of the party. A notice was issued to the leaders by the Investigating Officer of the Highgrounds Police in Bengaluru on Wednesday.

JP Nadda and Amit Malviya have been given a week's time to appear before the Bengaluru Police in connection with the video.

When asked about police summons issued to the BJP leaders, Karnataka Home Minister G Parameshwara said the social media post amounts to attacking certain laws against communal differences.

"Once they (Nadda and Malviya) come and give a statement or justify their statement, we will see what needs to be taken," he said.

The development comes a day after the Election Commission asked the micro-blogging site X to immediately take down the post shared by the Karnataka unit of the BJP.

"I am directed to inform that the post of 'BJP4Karnataka' is violative of extant legal framework. An FIR has already been registered in the matter. It is further brought to your notice that Chief Electoral Officer, Karnataka through Cyber Crime Division, Bengaluru has already directed X on 05.05.2024 to take down the objectionable post. However, the post has not been taken down yet," the letter by poll panel read.

Earlier, an FIR was registered against them and BJP Karnataka unit chief BY Vijayendra for posting a video on social media that purportedly showed the Congress favouring Muslims in reservation politics.

The video posted by the Karnataka BJP showed Congress leader Rahul Gandhi and state Chief Minister Siddaramaiah providing larger funds to Muslims, as compared to SCs, STs and OBCs.
