Ranchi: Jharkhand Chief Minister Hemant Soren on Wednesday, 31 January, resigned from his post amid a probe by the Enforcement Directorate (ED) over an illegal mining scam, plunging the state and the Jharkhand Mukti Morcha (JMM), a Congress ally, into crisis.

JMM MLAs earlier met Governor CP Radhakrishnan to request for party leader Champai Soren to be sworn in as the new chief minister, Jharkhand Minister Banna Gupta told the media.

This comes hours after officials arrived at Hemant Soren's Ranchi residence on Wednesday for the third consecutive day during the ongoing probe.

The development also comes hours after a First Information Report (FIR) was registered against ED officials under the SC/ST Act on the basis of a complaint by Soren.

Ahead of the arrest, JMM MLAs met Governor to submit a letter of support of 47 MLAs and request for party leader Champai Soren to be sworn in as the new chief minister.

Meanwhile, Hemant Soren has filed a writ petition in Jharkhand High Court against ED summons. The case will be taken up at 10:30 am on 1 February.
