The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) filed a charge sheet against Sanjay Roy, the prime accused in the rape and murder case of a trainee doctor at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital in Kolkata, ruling out the possibility of gang rape.

According to the CBI's charge sheet, submitted to a special court in Kolkata, Roy, who was working as a civic volunteer with the local police, committed the crime on August 9. The incident took place when the victim was resting in the hospital's seminar room during a break.

The charge sheet does not include gang rape charges, suggesting that Roy acted alone, officials said. However, the CBI has kept the investigation open for further developments.

The 33-year-old Roy initially confessed to the crime after being arrested on August 10. However, he made a U-turn during the polygraph test, claiming he was being framed and was innocent.

Roy, 33, was arrested by the Kolkata Police a day after the body of the 31-year-old postgraduate trainee doctor was found in the seminar hall of RG Kar Medical College. A Bluetooth device found near the medic's body led to Roy's arrest. CCTV footage also showed him on the third floor of the hospital where the seminar hall is situated.

The accused allegedly was close to a few senior Kolkata Police officers. The CBI earlier told the Supreme Court that the crime scene was altered by the time it took over the probe, which suggests there was an attempt by the local police to cover up the doctor's rape and killing.

The Calcutta High Court on August 13 ordered the transfer of the probe from the Kolkata Police to the CBI.
