A woman in West Bengal's Jalpaiguri district allegedly died by suicide after she was verbally abused and beaten by a group of women over her "extramarital affair". The police have arrested four people, including two women, in connection with the incident that took place amid widespread condemnation of the public flogging of a couple in the state's Uttar Dinajpur district recently for their illicit relationship.
In his police complaint, the victim's husband said his wife had been missing for a week, and the incident occurred on Monday upon her return home in Jalpaiguri's Dabgram-Fulbari area.
The group of women verbally and physically abused the victim and when her husband tried to intervene, he was also assaulted.
Later in the night, the woman consumed pesticide and died, the complaint added.
The arrest of the four people was confirmed by Deputy Commissioner (East) Dipak Sarkar, news agency PTI reported.
This latest incident came just days after the couple were publicly beaten in Uttar Dinajpur's Chopra area, drawing massive criticism from the Opposition in West Bengal.
