The Narendra Modi-led central government on Thursday reappointed former IPS officer Ajit Doval as the National Security Adviser (NSA).

His appointment will be co-terminus with the term of Prime Minister Narendra Modi or until further orders, a government order said.

"The Appointments Committee of the Cabinet has approved the appointment of Ajit Doval, IPS (Retired) as National Security Adviser with effect from 10.06.2024," said the order issued by the Personnel Ministry.

Doval, a 1968 batch IPS officer, first became the National Security Advisor to the PM on May 31, 2014.

As NSA, Ajit Doval would head the National Security Council (NSC), whose primary role is to advise the PM on issues related to national and international security.

During the term of his office, Doval will be assigned the rank of Cabinet Minister and the terms and conditions of his appointment will be notified separately.

Notably, the post of NSA was created for the first time in 1998 when nuclear tests were conducted for the second time in the country.
