Worker dies while cleaning septic tank in Patna

Patna: A 40-year-old sanitation worker, employed with Danapur Nagar Parishad, died after inhaling toxic gasses while cleaning the septic tank of a house at Chitrakut Nagar on the outskirts of the state capital on Thursday.

The labourer, Kishan Ram, was not carrying any safety equipment during the cleaning task at the house located on road number 9 in Chitrakut Nagar area of Danapur.

Danapur executive officer (EO) Jagannath Yadav Ram’s family was given Rs 25,000 compensation under Kabir Anteyashti Yojana while the house owner, Santosh Thakur, gave them Rs 2.5 lakh, even as they demanded Rs 5 lakh.

Danapur station house officer Samrat Deepak said Ram, a local resident of Dom Toli in Takiyapar area, had gone to clean the septic tank around 10am.

“Soon after entering the septic tank, he fell unconscious. The residents then dialled 112 of Patna police, after which a patrolling team reached there and pulled Ram out of the tank. He was taken to Danapur sadar hospital, where the doctors declared him dead.”

Deepak added prima facie the reason behind the death was the toxic gasses inside the tank that Ram inhaled in large amount. “The body was handed over to his wife Rubi Devi after post-mortem,” he said, adding there was no one else near the tank when the incident took place.

“We have not received any written complaint from his family members yet. The police, however, are investigating the matter.” Meanwhile, Danapur EO Yadav said Ram was not sent to the house by the nagar parishad but that he went on his own.

A 36-year-old woman, Lalsa Devi, was found dead at her home in Danapur. She had taken a loan of Rs 2.5 lakh from a microfinance company, with Anandi Ram as her guarantor. Ram visited Devi's home and asked her to repay the money, leading to a verbal altercation. Ram then slit Devi's throat with a knife. The accused, Ram, has been arrested, according to police.

Over 3,000 residents of the leprosy colony in Antulenagar of Kondhwa, Pune are facing water scarcity as PMC has not provided them with water tap connections despite installing 10 water tanks in the area. The residents, many of whom have physical disabilities, are unable to fetch water by themselves. The water tanks are placed along the roads without any pipeline, resulting in limited water storage. The reduced pipe width of the existing taps has led to poor water pressure for the residents. The PMC officials have promised to improve the water supply and provide optimum pressure.

An electrical engineer, a plumber, and his son died of suspected electrocution while fixing a hospital's underground water tank. The trio entered the tank to repair a motor attached to it and got electrocuted. Their bodies were found floating in the tank water. Delhi Fire Services reported that there was a current in the tank. The bodies have been shifted to the mortuary and the police are investigating the matter. The hospital owner expressed condolences and promised to take precautions and promised to take precautions and help the families.
