Centre in Thursday said it will start drafting the regulations today itself to deal with deepfakes. Union Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw had called a meeting with representatives of social media platforms on the issue of deepfakes on Thursday.

We had a meeting of all social media platforms and companies that are leaders in AI tools, Vaishnaw said in the press briefing on Thursday.

He said in the next 10 days, government will come up with actionable item on four pillars:

  • Detection

  • How to prevent the spread

  • How to strengthen the reporting

  • Awareness

The meeting comes amid concerns over misuse of technology and the government’s firm resolve to push digital platforms to crack down on deepfakes.

“We will start drafting the regulations today itself… Next meeting is on December 1… We will discuss on draft and follow-ups on what has been discussed today… The four pillars are important and will cover all aspects,” Vaishnaw said.

The regulation may be in a form of amending the existing rules or new law, he added.

“We will be uploading email ID, a nodal officer has been assigned.. All consultations will happen,” he said. Vaishnaw also said that there was a discussion on misleading ads on deepfakes.

The users have right to know what is natural and what is synthetic or not real, he said.

While deepfakes have been all over the internet for a long time now, the issue was urgently taken up by the government after a doctored video of actor Rashmika Mandanna went viral.

The deepfake video featured Rashmika’s face on another woman’s body. The video, which originally is of a British Indian woman Zara Parel, was morphed and edited in a way that it resembled Rashmika Mandanna.
