UP woman kills husband on Karwa Chauth by serving him poisoned macaroni for dinner

JJ News Desk

A woman in Uttar Pradesh's Kaushambi allegedly killed her husband by poisoning his food soon after breaking her fast on Karwa Chauth, a Hindu festival where wives pray for their husbands' long lives.

The victim, identified as Shailesh Kumar, 32, and his wife were reportedly facing problems in their marriage, police said.

On Sunday, Shailesh was busy with preparations for Karwa Chauth rituals since morning as his wife observed the customary fast.

In the evening, the couple had an argument just before the woman was to break her fast, police said.

The situation appeared to calm down after a while, and Savita prepared dinner. After serving him macaroni laced with poison, she fled under the pretext of visiting a neighbour.

Shailesh's health deteriorated soon after. His family rushed him to the hospital, but he died during treatment. Before his death, Shailesh recorded a video statement, accusing his wife of poisoning him.

His family, shocked by Shailesh's death, alerted the police, who took the body for post-mortem examination. Based on the complaint filed by Shailesh's brother, the police registered a case against Savita.

The police later arrested the accused woman and are interrogating her regarding the incident.

Kaushambi Superintendent of Police Brijesh Kumar Shrivastava confirmed the incident and said that further investigation into the matter is underway. He also said that legal action will be taken against the accused based on the post-mortem report.
